From 2 August 2021, an amendment of the Act on Residence of Foreigners will also affect new-born children of foreigners with a long-term residence permit, whose mother has a long-term residence permit in the Czech Republic at the time of birth and their father does not.

The child will be a participant in the public health insurance system from the date of its birth until the end of the calendar month, in which it will have reached 60 days of age. For further residence, it will be necessary to arrange commercial health insurance (if the child does not obtain another residence permit). The birth of a child needs to be announced within 8 days to the health insurance company, at which the mother is insured, and if the child’s mother does not have public insurance on the territory of the Czech Republic, then to the insurance company, at which the father is insured, and if even he does not have public insurance in CR, the birth of the child needs to be announced at the health insurance company Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna ČR (VZP ČR).

The insurance premium for these new-born children is paid by the natural guardian, legal guardian, or custodian to the account of the respective health insurance company in a one-time payment for the entire reference period. The insurance premium is due from the first until the last day of the reference period. The base of assessment is twice the amount of the minimum wage for the reference period. In the year 2021, the insurance premium reaches CZK 4,104.
