Electronic authorisation of travel: What to look out for when travelling to the UK?

Share article:

From 2 April 2025, the conditions of entry to the United Kingdom will change for Czech citizens. They will now have to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. This is not a visa requirement, but a registration in an automated system that can be done online.

What is the registration process?

Travellers will need to fill in a form on the official website and once submitted, they will receive a confirmation email. The standard processing time is up to three working days, but it is recommended to apply well in advance.

The ETA will be valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you must apply for a new registration. It will be possible to travel to the UK repeatedly with a valid ETA.

How much does an ETA cost and from what date will it be possible to obtain one?

Registration in the ETA system is available from 5 March 2025 at a cost of GBP 10. An ETA will also be required for transit through the United Kingdom if the traveller is transferring to another flight. An exception is so-called airside transit, where the passenger does not leave the transit area and does not go through passport control.

Who is affected by the new obligation?

ETA applies to all travellers planning a short stay of up to 6 months – whether for tourism, visiting family or friends, business or study.

More information and the registration form can be found on the official website of the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London.
